In spite of rehearsing, practicing and going through the same questions again and again, there is always a chance you might forget the answer. Or, you might go blank. As alarming as it may sound, not being able to answer a certain question happens pretty often.
Rather than stressing about this, go through these 5 basic tips which help you respond to the interview question even if you don’t have an answer to it.
1. Keep CalmÂ
Calming yourself down is the least you can do for yourself. If you do not have an answer to a particular question, make sure it doesn’t show on your face. If you let fear consume you, the interviewer may lose confidence in you. You can consider saying, “That is a great question, can I take some time to think about it?†This would tell the interviewer that you are willing to answer the question, you just need a bit of time.
2. “I Don’t Know “ is not an answer
Don’t even think of saying ‘I don’t know’ to the interviewer. Either say something relevant to the topic if not answering is an option for you or just take your time before answering it. Be careful not to blurt the first thing that comes to your mind. Take your time and respond to the interview question wisely.
3. Sip a glass of water
If you have a glass of water near you, take a sip and relax! It will also help you to take some time to think about an answer. Not being able to answer a question is not a crime. You do not have to panic. Drink water, clear your throat, and then respond to the interview question. Â
4. Beware of Trick Questions
At times, interviewers ask questions to throw you off guard. The interviewer knows that you don’t have may not have an answer to the question. The question has been asked to test your fortitude in reacting to a question you probably don’t know the answer too. Think and give your best answer. And, if you can’t, then try to ask the interviewer further questions to understand the query better.
5. Follow-up emails to the rescue
If you weren’t able to answer the question, follow-up emails are the most significant way to redeem yourself. After your interview round, go home and do a thorough research on the topic asked by the interviewer. When you know the answer, respond to the interview question via email. Follow up emails reflect your interest in the job in spite of your blunder.
